Thinking about ERP Implementation Hot

Getting to enterprise resource planning (ERP) is what a lot of small business operations are looking into these days. Some of them, however, may be rushing into the enterprise arena without first devising a game plan. That’s what you’ll need if you want your ERP implementation process to be successful. Small business managers need to understand that a software vendor is not just going to stop by and install an enterprise software system for you. It takes some work on your part as well, and this must be done in advance of implementing the software system. I mention small businesses, because it is now easier for them to apply ERP through Web-based, on-demand, software as a service. On-site, installed ERP is something that large companies prefer and is a much more involved process, which is timely and expensive. There are also frustrating glitches that can take place with on-site implementation of ERP. Still, even though an online implementation of ERP is a much easier process, it’s important that you properly prepare yourself in advance.

ERP Implementation

Thinking about ERP Implementation

Installing ERP on-site requires the purchase of software, servers, storage and training. With online software as a service (SaaS) you don’t have to purchase any software, servers, storage or training, which is minimal. Web-based ERP is convenient, but you need to know what your options are. If you know a business that has implemented ERP you should talk to them about their experience with the software system. But keep in mind, too, that their system will not necessarily work the way yours will. Every business has its own unique needs and way of conducting business. Your ERP platform will be set up with those considerations in mind. It is wise to see some demonstrations of the software in action and make comparisons of the different system platforms.

The application modules platform for a small manufacturing business may be somewhat different from that of an educational services company or an accountant. The software applications will vary based on the type of business the platform is developed for. You’ll want to know all of the relevant details before ERP implementation, so that you will be prepared to ask intelligent questions of the software vendor, in advance. The vendor will also have questions for you, concerning your needs and what you are trying to accomplish. He will use this information to help put together the type of platform that will work best for your business. This should be a team effort that includes members of your staff, as well as management. The ERP system requires that employees be prepared to work a little differently than they have in the past. There are also ERP consultants available to assist you, but just beware of them trying to steer you towards any particular vendors that they may especially like, for reasons other than your best interests.

Implementing this software goes well when you do your homework. Don’t take anything for granted and always be prepared to ask questions. If you plan well you will come out fine.

You’ll have to go through the ERP implementation process before you can experience the system. So, do it right.
