ERP as Small Company Software
Many small businesses are contemplating a software move. They’re ready to make the transition from out of the box programs to something more all-inclusive, like Enterprise resource Planning (ERP), which is increasingly becoming the software system of choice. But traditional enterprise systems are expensive to implement and quite often there are problems relating to cost overruns, poor training and insufficient service and maintenance. As such, the smart choice for small company software has been Web-based ERP; the hosted approach. This is software as a service, and is hosted by a software vendor that will host the software on a contractual basis.
This Web hosted approach means that you pay only for the number of users of the software and the amount of time they spend with the software. This is generally handled by subscription or leasing fees that might be paid, say, quarterly, for example. The appeal of Web-based ERP is that you don’t have to pay for expensive on-site servers and storage. All of the applications you need will be provided; you just pick and choose what you need to conduct business. You can also set up the system in such a way that it adapts to your way of working.
This is an attractive software approach because you neither buy nor own the software. This means that operating costs and overhead are kept low. Software as a service is also referred to as cloud computing, because you can pull the applications you need out of the cloud, a network of applications modules and tools that you can access as if on an electricity grid. You’ll be charged for what you use. Another nice thing about Web-based ERP is that you can access it from anywhere in the world. That translates into small company software that travels with you. That would not be possible with a traditional enterprise system, which stores everything you need at your headquarters.
You will find that with a Web-based ERP solution there are still alternatives. There are an increasing number of enterprise software vendors that are offering different types of products. That means you will still need to do some homework.
While researching Web hosted vendors, remember to request a Demo, so that you can see how the software performs; and be prepared to ask questions. You can play the enterprise game without losing your shirt. So, take some time to look into ERP and small company software
