Medical ERP Software
Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP, Software has been the best solution to businesses in many industries. Due to the nature of ERP Software it has to be specific for each industry. Different operations and applications are going to be called for in each industry and each industry will find sticking points and drawbacks with the use of ERP. Healthcare is no exception.
Due to the considerable differences in activities that occur in manufacturing plants and those that take place in patient care, traditional ERP software based systems do not clearly translate to the healthcare setting. Most notably, the lack of clinical standardization slows down the use of ERP systems for clinical integration. Still, an ERP software system is capable of providing some solutions to a healthcare organization by integrating many functions including patient scheduling, workload forecasting, management of workflow, and human resource management that are not directly dependent on clinical decision making as well as some that are.
Medical ERP Software has to operate in one of the world’s most highly regulated industries. Success in this industry is connected to time, reliability of information, accountability, security, and traceability. And, unlike other businesses where mistakes may mean monetary losses, mistakes in the medical business might mean physical harm and possibly death.
ERP vendors designing product for the medical field take this responsibility very seriously, and are constantly working to develop the best Medical ERP Software possible. At the present time, many issues are getting the attention of these IT professionals. One of these is data accuracy. The data entered into medical software must be accurate and cannot get contaminated as it travels from the original intake, to the surgical department, to the in-patient floor, and back to the outpatient files. It is of vital importance that doctors can trust the information they see: what medicines is a patient allergic to; what dose has already been administered; what did the x-rays show, etc. Security is another critical issue that Medical ERP Software must address. In this age of laws protecting patient rights to privacy, a healthcare organization must insure their data systems cannot be accessed by unauthorized personnel. A third issue being considered is that medical expenses are almost impossible to forecast because each encounter with a patient can have unpredictable outcomes. Indeed, the treatment of every patient varies to some degree in terms of processes, staffing, and facility usage. Complicating things further is the fact that health care relies upon a network of relationships between physicians, hospitals, laboratories, insurance companies, government agencies, employers, and patients.
For ERP software to truly help the medical field, all of these aforementioned issues must be accounted for in a system.
