Quite a few businesses searching for ERP software discover there is no, one "off the shelf" software package which will completely fit their needs. A response to this discovery is to find a vendor who will work with them to design Custom ERP Software. However, the issue of Custom ERP Software is still controversial.

While it is true that a customized ERP system will impact the internal workings of a business in a more concrete way and so ultimately, on the balance sheet, systems that have been modified will always require maintenance at a much more frequent level than one that has not. A general overview is that strategic customizations can enhance the IT infrastructure strategic alignment with the business strategy, while non-strategic customization can impact the system agility of the corporation.

So the question now is: With so many vendors devoted specifically to the design of all-inclusive, fully integrated software systems, why would a business need to customize ERP software in order to run their complete administration process? And, the answer is not simple.  There are arguments and counter-arguments for each important point.

First of all, it is important understand how tied your business is to doing things the traditional ways. But other business leaders do not accept the idea that their employees should change their method of operations to accommodate a software package; they want the ERP software to conform to their preferred way of operating.

Another point to consider is tied in to the future expectations of the business. As business requirements evolve, more changes to the ERP software will be needed. Although both customized solutions and ERP packages are often difficult to extend into new business functionalities, off-the-shelf ERP suites are known to excel in their ability to grow with the business.

At this time, it is worthwhile examining the strengths of the company, and how software solutions may impact those strengths. For example, if a company’s order processing ability constitutes a competitive edge over competing businesses, it would make no sense to install an off-the-shelf order processing solution that virtually eliminated this edge.

To conclude, businesses should know that there are clear benefits to be gained from Custom ERP software.  This does not mean, however, that they should ignore the fact that the benefits are purchased at the high price paid for individualized development and maintenance costs.
