ERP System

Working with an ERP Software System

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) has been around for some time now and it has changed the way many companies do business. It started with large industrious companies and manufacturers, but has since been implemented by all types of businesses, both large and small. Within the last few years we have seen the inclusion of Web-based software as a service (SaaS) platforms that have become very popular, especially with small and midsized businesses. So what is in an ERP software system?

ERP systems can handle a broad range of functions that are integrated into one platform, database or repository. These functions might include such things as finance and accounting, sales and marketing, human resources, customer relationship management, supply chain management, manufacturing, the warehouse … These functions were once dealt with as separate, stand-alone applications; however today, they can all be brought together under one umbrella.

It’s an integrated system whereby all of the separate parts or applications are brought together to increase the performance of the whole system. Sales and marketing are connected with customer relationship management, and both of these units are connected with all of the others. on one platform. These functions are represented by applications modules that can either be stand alone or bundled together. The accounting module, for example, might be bundled with a number of applications for such things as cash flow management, project accounting, payroll, multi-currency management, analytical accounting, e-banking … This is the efficiency of an ERP software system.

This software system can also provide analysis, reports, and business intelligence. It can be activated with fewer employees because it is automated for quickly processing business tasks. It also makes it easier for employees to work together, sharing information and data. This information and data is available to all designated employees to see and work with. If manufacturing needs information from supply chain management, it is readily available to access in real time. Connections can also be included for resources and contacts outside of the company.

Enterprise resource planning has certainly come a long way over the years; and in the process has changed the way business is conducted for all types of organizations. For small and midsized companies it has been an effective tool for growing business. And with a Web-based ERP software system you can connect from anywhere, at any time. ERP represents a smarter way of doing business, and that’s why so many organizations are taking advantage of it.
