The Past, the Present, and the Future of the ERP Market

As our world continues to evolve into one global economy, Enterprise Resource Planning or ERP software solutions continue to evolve as well.  On-site proprietary ERP software solutions are no longer the only option.  Today there are SaaS (software as a service) Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions, on-demand Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions, and open source Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions.  With all of these ERP options available to businesses around the world, the market for Enterprise Resource Planning software solutions is expected to grow to over fifty billion dollars by the end of 2011.  And, the Enterprise Resource Planning market for software solutions has been growing at about eleven percent per year since 2006.  However, eleven percent per year is not considered all that substantial of a growth rate considering that in the past (prior to 2006) the Enterprise Resource Planning market grew at an eighteen percent rate per year.  As the 1990s came and went so did the days of spending like crazy.

Even though businesses aren’t spending like it is the 1990s, they are still buying ERP software solutions.  And, businesses will continue to buy ERP software solutions in the future.  Although it is correct to assume that the pot of monies earned in the future for Enterprise Resource Planning solutions will be more distributed amongst different types of ERP solutions.  For example, SaaS Enterprise Resource Planning solutions and other cloud related ERP solutions will take a piece of the fifty billion dollar pie.  These types of Enterprise Resource Planning solutions propel us towards a global economy by enabling easy web-based access to traveling personnel.  Collaboration tools will become essential for all businesses; especially global based businesses.  And, mobile ERP solutions will become more and more important.  Everyone wants access to their business information no matter where they are in the world.  One trend we are sure to not see in quite a while, if ever, is the boom that happened in the 1990s.  Software startups popped up all over the place and saturated the software market.  Today, the Enterprise Resource Planning market remains quite saturated.  However, many of the smaller ERP vendors have went out of business or were bought by larger Enterprise Resource Planning vendors.  Surviving our recent recession was a difficult task.  Now that our economy is slowly coming back you can bet that the future of Enterprise Resource Planning solutions will be quite bright.
