ERP Software

Preparing your ERP Checklist

Some businesses have experienced problems with implementing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) because they weren’t properly prepared. They depended too much on the software vendor rather than doing their own homework. This happens all too often, and it is very important that small businesses take note of it, because they can least afford to get burned. Take nothing for granted; understand what you want to accomplish, then review companies and their products. You’ll be breaking down your list of vendors as you make comparisons. Don’t rush this process; being unprepared and unaware will cost you money. Many businesses have learned that. So, take some time to prepare your ERP checklist before going forward.

As you put your checklist together you will be thinking about such things as, the vendor and its product. How good is the software company and its product line? Do they have references and testimonials from satisfied clients? You should also ask to speak to some of those customers. Will they give you an in-house demo? What challenges will you face following implementation and deployment of the software? Is everything absolutely compatible? What about the future, will you be able to extend the software or make any changes to the platform?

Remember that your employees will be playing a big role in the use of this software and they will need to be thoroughly. Make sure that they are on your side and understand the implementation process. They will have to learn how to use this new system and different way of working. Your ERP checklist should inquire about all aspects of the training procedures. Be sure to check and verify all costs relating to the software product and its implementation; and don’t hesitate to ask a lot of questions. If you feel that it is necessary, talk to an ERP consultant.

You’re investigating this software because you want to improve business processes. In order to that, you will need to have a real clear understanding of how the software operates. Look at what you are doing now; how you operate. Be prepared to explain that to the software vendor; show how and where you’d like to make improvements.

If you are seeking a Web-based, hosted, enterprise solution, then you also might want to consider Open Source enterprise software. There are free versions of this software and paying versions. You may want to look into this alternative as an option. If you purchase enterprise source code, you will need an IT person to apply it. These are just a few things to think about when putting together your ERP checklist.
