You and your ERP Software selection
Take your time and be careful. That’s probably the advice you would get when trying to make the right ERP software selection. And it would be good advice, too. It’s not such an easy job select such a system and any business contemplating such a move should be very conscious of doing their homework in advance. Think about the software you are using now and how you would like to upgrade. If you’re a small and midsized business you should probably be looking at a Web- based solution, and there are some good options to choose from here.
Web-based packages known as software as a service (SaaS) or cloud computing, are very popular these days; they have given SMBs an opportunity to implement such systems. This market segment has grown appreciably and many software vendors are focusing on it. These packages are less costly and the implementation process is easier. And even with Web-based systems, you have options to choose from. They are generally fee based by subscription and the number of users. There are also open source Web-based enterprise software available, some for free if you just want the source code; but they also offer proprietary commercial packages for cost. These would include service and support.
You’ve heard the old saying, shop around; well that’s exactly what you’re going to have to do in order to find the right solution for your business. Check out some demos and talk to others who have implemented the system. These software packages are very popular, but it is unlikely that you will find the perfect solution. There will always be some drawbacks, some give and take. But you should be able to find a package that will suit your needs; just don’t rush into making an ERP software selection.
And keep in mind that you’ll be getting a software system that is integrated and streamlined for efficiency and effectiveness. All business applications will be provided for. These might include finance and accounting, inventory, purchasing and procurement, marketing and sales, planning and scheduling, project management, supply chain management, customer relationship management, analytics and business intelligence, and then some.
It’s an on-demand system that will change the way you do business. That means that you won’t need a whole lot of employees because the system is automated for swift business processing and the sharing of information and data. It also gives small business a head’s up in the way they operate; they can appear to be larger. Find out about it, when you make your ERP software selection.
