ERP Software

ERP Software Package

Enterprise resource planning can be defined as company-wide computer software systems that ensure coordination of all resources, information, and productivity between the different departments of a business. Businesses value ERP solutions because of their ability to integrate information, improve productivity, improve business agility, reduce errors, and automate many operational functions. The complexity of the ERP software is directly proportional to the size and scope of the business’ operation. Once it reaches the level of providing support for at least two areas of business operations, it can be called an ERP software package.

The structure of enterprise resource planning software packages offering solutions is complex.  For a business to implement this software, it takes time, skill, and money. All three of these variables will again be affected by the size and scope of the business. For example, ERP implementation for very large companies has been known to require skilled technicians, cost thousands of dollars, and take years.

Not every ERP software package is right for every company in every industry. ERP systems are to be had in all sizes and shapes for all platforms and development environments. Evaluating the available ERP systems and then selecting the right one is critical. ERP packages were developed from the knowledge gained by the successes and failures of companies within a specific industry. With experience, what worked and did not work with certain segments of an operation evolved over time. The knowledge gained from implementations, user feedback, entrance into new territories, and the demand to gain an edge over the competition, forced most ERP vendors to redefine and expand the scope of the performance and functionality of their ERP software packages.

The major issue in selecting an ERP software package which will be right for the business is to first answer the questions: why are we implementing ERP in the organization, and what are the specific problems we would like the ERP solution to solve?  The answers will pinpoint certain areas for improvement and thus provide a good idea of what kind of ERP packages the company should be looking at.

This is also the time for businesses to evaluate the suitability of vendors and their technology. What is their vision for the future and how does it support the vision of the business? How is the vendor going to ensure the investment the business makes will be worthwhile and protected?  The manner in which a vendors handles implementation and support should also be examined since without those, the best ERP software package will be almost worthless.
