ERP Software

Advantages of enterprise resource planning

There are many advantages to Enterprise Resource Planning software which is principally an integration of business management practices and modern technology. The heart of enterprise resource planning is a centralized data repository which collects information from all the applications operating on a universal computing platform. In other words, ERP supports the accumulation and re-distribution of information previously strewn across all functional units of a business. This gathered data then gives the business executives a comprehensive analysis of the state of the business which thereby affects the decisions made at the highest level of management.

Before a software system can be considered ERP, it has to offer a variety of functionalities supported by features like flexibility, modularity & openness, widespread, finest business processes, and global focus to a business.Initially, ERP was an advantage for large companies because it could be utilized in so many ways. For example, the same enterprise resource planning system could collect enough data from throughout the business’ departments to predict product demand, order the necessary raw materials, establish production schedules, track inventory, allocate costs, and plan key financial measures.

Although ERP software systems were at first used only by big, industrial companies, the advantages of enterprise resource planning were so demonstrably evident that soon smaller companies from a range of fields began to implement the software solutions. This shift became even more apparent once functions such as Human Resources, Supply Chain Management, Customer Relationship Management, Finance, Manufacturing Warehouse Management, and Logistics were added to general ERP software solutions. The proper ERP therefore produced increased efficiency and made a business more effective through its ability to generate shorter intervals between orders and payments, lower back-office staff requirements, reduced inventory, and improved customer service.

It is important to note that when small and medium-sized companies, and those involved in service rather than manufacturing industries began to employ ERP software, the solutions had to adjust. Vendors responded by creating a new generation of ERP software that was easier to install, less wieldy, required less implementation time, and involved lesser startup costs.

Another important advantage of enterprise resource planning systems is that they allow a business to exchange a maze of complex computer applications for one central, integrated system. All of this while still allowing for a modular model which accepts the purchase and implementation of individual function-specific applications, and recognizes installation in lesser increments with only minor support from information technology professionals.
