Who Are the Leaders in the ERP Industry?  Part  1

The leading ERP software vendors, as far as profits go, include SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, Sage, and Epicor.  However the leading ERP software vendor of today may be gone tomorrow.  And, the leading ERP software vendor may not have a solution that is best for your business.  Enterprise Resource Planning vendors can be compared in many ways.  For example, vendor A may lead in terms of financials functionality, vendor B may lead in terms of profits, and vendor C may lead in terms of price point.

So, how does a prospective ERP client select and riffle through all the ERP leaders and followers?  Well, you could get out your crystal ball.  If you don’t have a crystal ball, perhaps you could read some tarot cards.  If you have neither of these trinkets, you are in the same boat as everyone else.  You might want to start exploring ERP software solutions by reading reviews and following up on the vendor’s website.  Keep in mind that a good review doesn’t mean that the ERP solution will be good for you.  Map out your business processes, the gaps in your current methods, and the type of automation you expect from an Enterprise Resource Planning solution.  Think about the size of your business, the industry you are in, and integration issues.  Then decide what type of ERP solution you want; on-site ERP solution, hosted ERP solution or an open source ERP solution.  Consider potential customizations, who will make the customizations, who will support the customizations and so on.

In the remainder of this article we will discuss the top five leading ERP software vendors starting with SAP.  SAP is a German company started in 1972.  SAP offers one of the most robust Enterprise Resource Planning solutions on the planet earth.  Whatever industry you are in, SAP can handle it.  SAP is like the superhero of ERP solutions.  Besides their on-site ERP solution, SAP offers e-business solutions through a web interface known as mySAP.com.

Another god-like ERP vendor is Oracle.  This leading Enterprise Resource Planning vendor has extensive functionality and a few powerful solutions to choose from including; Oracle J.D. Edwards, Oracle Enterprise One (PeopleSoft), and Oracle Fusion.  Oracle has been in the IT industry for decades.  While they started out as a database provider, they have made a huge name for themselves as a leading ERP software vendor.
