Manufacturing ERP

Initially, modern businesses used manufacturing resource planning to keep track of inventory at the plant. These traditional systems were restricted to planning the assignment of the resources for only one sector of the business. Eventually, MRP II developed. This system used newly developed applications for coordinating businesses processes such as: product planning, part purchasing, inventory control, and product distribution. And, as technology advanced, ERP –with its ability to plan for many sectors- found its way into the manufacturing arena. Manufacturing ERP was born. Manufacturing ERP software systems were more inclusive.  They could be used to manage the entire business rather than just the manufacturing processes.

The purpose of Manufacturing ERP (enterprise resource planning) is to make a back and forth flow of information possible among the functions of a business, and to organize that information into reports which can be utilized by management and by stakeholders.  Basically, manufacturing ERP software is what businesses look to in order to connect the disparate parts of their operation. This unity gives all business’ departments the same view of company data and encourages collaboration between departments. By streamlining the parts that make up the whole, the centralized system ends up increasing manufacturing efficiency. This, in turn, will cut costs and increase revenue.

Manufacturing ERP software emphasizes the importance of integration and data sharing across the enterprise. Lack of integration and not having single view data means information is not being properly exchanged, there are inconsistencies with reports, and tasks are needlessly being performed more than once. All of this represents a waste of time and, of course, a waste of money.

Vendors of manufacturing ERP say that their software can provide an organized way for businesses to run everything from the moment an order comes in to the moment the money for that particular order has been collected. The best products capture other facets of a manufacturing enterprise; facets such as financials, asset utilization, and customer service. Perhaps the most important advantage of manufacturing erp, though, will occur only when the software can be made to run parallel to the actual strategy of the company.

Changing the way a business operates is costly, time consuming, and disruptive, so businesses need to be sure buying and implementing manufacturing ERP will earn more than it will cost. There are many manufacturing ERP software vendors.  With so much product on the market, a business needs to research and investigate in order to choose exactly what software will fulfill all of its needs.
