ERP Modules – What are they and what do they do – Part 5

The Lot Traceability ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) module is a very important module in certain industries.  For example, the food industry needs to keep track of their lots in case of recall or expiration.  Some Lot Traceability modules are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) enabled.

All businesses need to keep track of their order transactions.  The Order Entry ERP module allows you to do just this.  You can enter orders, create packing slips, create shipping labels, track transaction details, track sales information and perform just about any task associated with the order.

The Research and Development Management ERP module enables you to manage every aspect of research and development.  You can make sure you stick to budget requirements, in compliance with specific agencies, meet government regulations, and streamline the entire research and development project.

There are several different reporting modules that ERP vendors offer.  Each module has different reporting capabilities.  You’ll need to explore all reporting abilities on the Enterprise Resource Planning vendor’s website, which is usually rich in documentation.  You can also demo modules and ask for a trial.

The Enterprise Performance Management (EPM) ERP module enables you to measure the performance of all management processes.  PeopleSoft, now acquired by Oracle, Microsoft and SAP all have EPM systems that integrate with ERP solutions.

There are several more ERP modules.  Many are industry specific.  For example, Oracle has a Transportation Management module.  You probably don’t need this module unless you’re in the transportation industry.  The key to knowing which ERP modules you need is to know your business processes and know your industry well.  Define your business within your industry so that you can determine how you can set yourself apart.  There’s fierce competition in the marketplace today.  Every business is trying to make a buck since the economy decided to dive down into the dark abyss.

Enterprise Resource Planning solutions enable you to streamline your processes to add efficiency to your operations.  The less time and money you spend making your product, for example, means more profit.  When shopping Enterprise Resource Planning solutions, consider how the functionality offered by the ERP vendor will enhance your existing system.  Look for solutions that you can easily integrate.  Make sure you like the look and feel of the solution.  It’s a big investment and you want to make sure you’re going to like what you buy.
