ERP Software

Distribution ERP software

An ERP system refers to the software tools which ensure that a business will run as efficiently as possible. These systems are constructed to deal with all the basic functions of a specific venture, regardless of how that business is organized or what, if anything, it produces. Basically, enterprise resource planning systems can computerize the operations and processes of any business.

In a manufacturing company, an ERP system is designed to coordinate all the complex events that have to happen in order for a manufacturer to receive an order, manufacture a product, and then deliver the finished product to the customer.

The history of ERP really began with inventory management software developed in 1960. Later, more specific software was developed so businesses could track many basic functions. As these solutions became commonplace, a need grew for more robust applications capable of addressing other areas of business. And one of these needs was distribution.

Most ERP software solutions contain some distribution software functionality, yet not all of them offer robust enough features to manage complex distribution channels. To offset the huge cost of ERP software, and then the added costs of implementation and maintenance, ERP must offer more than the basic features. Distribution companies are concerned with software functionality.  At all times they need to maintain optimal inventory, facilitate movement of goods at optimum rates as quickly as possible, provide front office functionality (for customer service), and deliver reports with data that can be used to improve performance.

Businesses know distribution ERP software is necessary in order to stay competitive. Three years ago CIO magazine reported 85 percent of executives surveyed cited ERP systems as central to the core of a business. And eighty percent asserted their company could not function as efficiently without ERP software systems.

For those companies operating in a wholesale distribution environment and hoping to purchase or upgrade their software solutions, there are four basic qualifications that wholesale distributors look for in distribution ERP software: strong supply chain management capabilities; distribution requirements planning to support various distribution centers; integrated CRM functionality; and integrated warehouse management. Strong systems will also offer features such as heavy-duty budget and financial management, and kitting and assembly capabilities for light manufacturing.

There are many vendors who sell distribution ERP software but BMA Software is the only vendor who uses Microsoft technology. This is attractive to many companies who prefer to use ERP solutions that can interface with a company they already use.
