Open Source is Civil
As we humans evolve, so does our technology. Humans have gone from the discovery of fire, to the invention of the wheel, to the intellectuals we are today. Technology has evolved from punch cards, to mainframe computers, to the sleek, sexy client-server technologies we have today. Do you recall the first mainframe computer? It was gigantic! It took up all available space in one room. Our programming languages were barbaric and not nearly as complex and enabling as today’s languages.
Today, in the year 2010, humans and technology alike are quite civilized. In fact, in the past few years, technology has blossomed. Open source technology has become quite popular for the many benefits it provides. ERP open source technology is new to the market, and expected to grow like crazy.
So why is open source on the rise? First of all, it’s free! Need I say more? Truly, no licensing fees at all. Besides being free, it’s very customizable. You take it and do what you want with it. If you need your open source ERP Supply Chain module to have improved functionality to meet your business needs, then all you’ve got to do is customize it. If you want to upgrade your open source ERP Financials module, then you can do so. If your open source ERP software is upgraded by the vendor, you surely don’t have to take it. The power to do what you want is in your hands. But, play nice because you wouldn’t want to customize so extremely that you nor the expensive hired guns you employ can fix your broken customization.
With all this civility going around, don’t you want to ask yourself “why is someone giving me free open source ERP software”? In a world like the one we live in, everyone is out to make a buck. So, why free software? Well, that’s an easy question to answer. You see, by putting free software on the market, the vendor gains market share. Support licenses are worth mucho dinero and the vendor will land itself many of these licenses! For example, there’s lots of free websites out there on the world wide web. These websites are free because advertisers pay the vendor to place their adds on these sites. In a round about way, the website host makes money. Open source is similar; an open source vendor makes money in a round about way.
