The area to hone in on is remote desktop.  The goal here is to get remote desktop access and virtual network computing that is now available from many vendors and suppliers is a key because it doesn’t matter what hardware or device you are using.  You can get to your information.  A few of the large mobile devise manufacturers are building alliances with companies to bridge this gap, but this is not the optimal way to go when building your companies mobile capabilities.  Its better to remain device independent to capitalize on new technologies and applications that are continually flooding the market.  This long term design in your infrastructure will yield higher return on investment down the road.

The solution to device independence lies in the mobile middleware you choose.  The right mobile middleware can customize the interaction with a device to map critical sections of a desktop display to a small mobile screen targeting the most critical information. Middleware can also provide data compression and small apps on the device itself can eliminate the need for a big engine on the back end.

As a rule of thumb, it is a good idea to assume that the key factor enabling mobile computing in the near future will be with Web sevices, and right now the best solution will be a hybrid local and remote app strategy.  Of course you can count on increased performance on wireless networks, and variety in mobile devices to connect with your local ERP systems.
