SaaS erp software systems present some basic differences when compared to what are termed “traditional Erp” solutions.  Essentially, the two types of enterprise resource planning software solutions differ in several aspects, although they both comprise the basic technical characteristics of Erp software systems. One primary area of contrast involves a number of specific features deemed indispensable to the process of global ERP implementation and deployment (along with service packages, training materials and related documentation, including 24/seven, around the clock customer and technical support) by a vendor of ERP software solutions to customers, potentially interested buyers or business partners and affiliates.

The Basic Differences Between SaaS Erp and “Traditional Erp” Software Systems (Pt. 1 of 2)

As a first point, it is important to analyze their respective definitions. “Traditional ERP” software systems are basically run internally and are hosted by the buyer company's own servers and support platforms. Needless to say, the latter normally conform to industrial standards, which ensures compatibility with the major popular support platforms (The Microsoft/.NET framework, the Java Systems computer language, XML, among others which also include Unicode Support compliance for multi-language translation to aid in the simultaneous penetration of multiple foreign markets), that are used on a daily basis by Internet users and the majority of businesses from multiple industries around the globe, which rely on Internet technology and real-time, on line applications for a variety of multiple purposes.

These include the following: To maintain and improve customer relations; promote market visibility and presence through the use of advertising and marketing tools such as the social media networking outlets (Facebook, Twitter, Youtube being the most popular among the genre) as well as via on line blogs and discussion forums; for integrating and homogenizing the organization of its internal company functions and related departments- including its international market activities; and finally, for consolidating communication and data interchange with their partners and customers around the globe and attract customer audiences from the most diverse fields of activity, which may be interested in learning about the benefits of erp systems for augmenting their business growth, and expand in the global market.

SaaS erp is defined as “Software as a Service” and is a “hosting” service for ERP software systems implemented by individual companies, co-operatives, and the industrial clusters of multiple business interests or consortiums which make up the composition of the ERP industry. It is used by buyers who may prefer to relegate to their vendor the handling and operability of their ERP software systems and related software applications- which are then “hosted” on the vendor's own servers and support platforms.

The main arguments against implementing SaaS erp, is that these hosting systems naturally provide less flexibility and customization potential than traditional ERP solutions. Since SaaS erp systems are not hosted on the customer's own servers, but are installed in those of the vendor itself, the buyer is dependent on the host company for the expected delivery of regular upgrades and updates and does not, nor can it have, full capability to customize it individually to its preference or even rewrite the software, whenever the need for the company may arise.
