Enterprise resource planning (ERP) has redefined how business is administered. It has provided an intelligent, integrated, seamless platform that has modified the way many companies do business today. This enterprise software system has also given a big boost to small businesses that now have the opportunity to experience a self-contained software system that can manage all of its business processing, offer real-time communication and visibility, and report on the businesses activity and offer up intelligence on performance. It’s a distributed system, unlike how companies had previously been used to working. Enterprise software has grown tremendously over the years, from original on-site installations of servers, storage and software, (which still exists for large corporate installations) to Web-based, hosted applications available on demand.

ERP Software

ERP to the Rescue

So the playing field has been somewhat evened. All businesses now have access to some form of ERP system. And online applications known as Software as a Service and cloud computing - again, on-demand, has become the biggest software market. It seem everybody wants access to this system and now they can get it. If you’re not yet familiar with enterprise software it’s about time you became acquainted with it. It can provide solutions for such business operations as accounting, sales, marketing, manufacturing, and distribution, supply chain management, construction, transportation, engineering, architecture and the beat goes on. Even big cities such as Los Angeles and New York and being run on enterprise software.

Rather than running individual pieces of software, you are supplied with all of the software you need, to process any business task; and it is all located in one place, a single database or repository, from which management and staff can withdraw the tools they need to administer the business. ERP software gives all designated staff a view into operations, so that they can see what is happening within the organization and where. The system is integrated with software modules and tools for communicating, collaborating and sharing. The use of paper work is dramatically reduced, though document printouts can easily be done as needed.

The enterprise approach for small businesses means that means that they can work more efficiently, while at the same time experiencing more effective outcomes in business in transactions. This software system can save a company time and it can also have a positive effect on a business’s bottom line. Online access to ERP means that the cost is also agreeable, as a business need only pay a subscription fee for usage. This fee will be assessed based on the number of users and the amount of time they spend online with the system.

It’s clear that ERP is not a fad in a phase. If anything, technology will continue to tweak the system and make it even better than it is today. This system has grown over the years, from manufacturing resource planning, to materials resource planning and now enterprise resource planning. It’s taken just over 4o years to get here, but progress has been made all along the way. For many businesses, this software system has come to their rescue; that’s progress.
