ERP, or Enterprise Resource Planning, can be defined as conglomeration of multi-module software applications that bring together the different departments in a company by integrating business functions and making data accessible to all authorized personnel.

ERP had its beginnings in the early 1960s when IBM and J.I. Case (a construction machinery company) got together and created software they called Material Requirements Planning or MRP. The application software was clumsy to operate but performed its task well. Still, the software had a very limited purpose as these tasks only revolved around helping manufacturers plan and schedule materials for manufacturing complex products.  Early in the 70s, five engineers started SAP –a company that produced standard software for more integrated business procedures. By 1980, JD Edwards had already begun to focus on the second generation of MRP, called Manufacturing Resources Planning (MRP) II. It was to take ten years before the term ERP was coined to describe software that also integrated engineering, finance, project management, and human resources into the system solutions. In only ten years, by the end of the 90s, the benefits of an ERP solution for businesses in all industries had been well document and so it wasn’t long before major enterprises and many medium sized businesses had implemented some sort of ERP in order to run the companies more efficiently.
