ERP Software Systems in the Video Game Industry: Critical Issues Faced by Companies That Develop ERP-based Online-Only Video Games

One of the most critical and recurring problems encountered by the various video game companies which employ the services of ERP software systems vendors, is the issue of game user option alternatives that are in addition to the on-line functions of those games for which ERP is specifically implemented. In essence, ERP system-based video games that are sold exclusively for online use, eventually lead to problems with compatibility and diversification. These issues affect different system platforms developed by companies and individual businesses which may be potentially interested in partnering with the big video game developers, to design a compatible version of their vide game for use by their individual clientele.

Video-Games That Incorporate ERP Software Functions in their Gaming Applications  Despite the compatibility issues for the different software and program platforms which are operated by diverse businesses, there are some very successful and globally popular, widely-used and online-only videogames which, because of their specific characteristics and gaming qualities, undoubtedly require the implementation of ERP software systems. A description of their nature is necessary at this point, to explain why- and how- the characteristics of such popular video games, ultimately fulfill the basic purpose and multiple functions for which ERP software systems are developed in the first place.

It will also help to understand why these games are so appealing to the masses in general and in such a large scale, since there many characteristics presented by these games which make them attractive to the general public and the individual user specifically. It will be seen that their appeal is not solely due to the obvious fact that they are on-line games to begin with, and as a result are accessible globally to a wider audience through the world wide web.

To mention a few examples, World of War Craft is probably one of the top games in the fantasy on-line role-playing genre, along with Everquest. These two are particularly interesting for a variety of reasons, and especially because they are exemplary of the general characteristics shared by all of the other globally popular on-line games. For instance, the use of ERP software systems in these games is revealed in their main objective; which is to allow the user to create a personalized avatar and journey through one or many infinite worlds and inter-act, in real-time, with other online users and the entire game environment.
