ERP Manufacturing System

If you own a small to mid-sized business or act as a technology manger for a smaller enterprise, you may have spent some time evaluating the possibility of an ERP manufacturing system. You may already know how an ERP manufacturing system can improve efficiency and productivity on your shop floor, and you may be aware that an ERP manufacturing system can allow all of your departments to integrate their diverse software functions onto a single unified software infrastructure. But if you haven’t looked into ERP manufacturing system options in a few years, you may be concerned that the cost of these systems lies beyond the reach of your technology budget.

It may be time to reinvestigate what an ERP manufacturing system can do for your bottom line. Early systems that were implemented by large sprawling firms in the 1990s were certainly beyond the reach of most mid-sized, independent firms. By today’s standards, these systems were not only prohibitively priced, but they also lacked the coordination and flexibility of more recent architectures. Modules designed to be run on older systems also required the company to own and maintain a complete single or multi-tier server architecture, which contributed to the overall operating cost of system implementation.

But in recent years, many of these things have changed. An ERP manufacturing system may within reach. Whatever your manufacturing model, the right ERP manufacturing system can provide faster returns on your initial investment that comparable systems could have just a few years ago.

At this point, many firms that produce pharmaceuticals, apparel, food and beverages, and other goods are reinvestigating ERP manufacturing system options and finding that modules designed to handle shop floor and back office functions can now be run through hosting solutions and software service providers. These intermediary firms can allow business owners to run applications on a collective server in a rental capacity, which can allow smaller firms to sidestep server ownership and maintenance costs. Small firms can also use these infrastructures to house secure databases where they can be accessed by authorized users and updated in real time. Many smaller firms are also taking advantage of the availability of freeware and open source software, which can help manage back office business functions and can be downloaded over the internet at little or no cost.

Finally, large established ERP providers like Microsoft and Oracle have invested new energy in catering to the smaller business market and have invested research and development in scaled, customized back office solutions that can handle functions like accounting, human resource management, customer relationship payroll. An ERP manufacturing system and its benefits may be more within reach than you realize, and may allow your firm to stay afloat during difficult times.
