Accounting Manufacturing Software: one size does not fit all

To say that there is a large number of accounting manufacturing software packages on the market would be understating by just a bit.  I did just one internet search on “accounting manufacturing software” and got 12,600,000 hits. Of course the search did not produce 12,600,000 software titles but it did prove that there is a LOT of information out there.  Subsequently, there are also a lot of different accounting manufacturing software products available, as well.

So, of course, there are some packages that will fit a business environment better than others. There are the big names, SAP, Oracle and even Microsoft, once content with the home PC market – those days have gone the way of the horse and one can easily see the Microsoft sitting squarely in the accounting manufacturing software arena with Microsoft Dynamics.

Though not household names, other companies are well known in the business community. For instance, Sage has its ACCpac ERP and Peachtree Manufacturing products available and not to be forgotten, Netsuite, Intuit, Syspro…the list goes on.  Proprietary custom-made accounting manufacturing software is also available.  There is a lot to choose from but it is important to know what you need it for and whether it fits your business needs and system environment.

Skiing is a great sport. It has many fans and the beauty and excitement that it provides is considerable. Fans would be in complete agreement with this statement but is the skier swishing down a slippery slope of skipping over the surface of a lake or lagoon?  Both are skiing but they use different equipment to produce different results with the same name.

It’s the same way with accounting manufacturing software, a small firm employing ten individuals whose primary business is delivering meals to the elderly and disabled, will have completely different requirements and computer environment from a large automobile manufacturer employing thousands.

SAP might be a great choice for the auto manufacturer.  It is built to handle businesses of that magnitude but would be completely inappropriate for the operations of the small business providing meals for seniors and disabled.   The auto manufacturer massive assembly lines producing thousands of vehicles and delivering them to dealers around the world…that is SAP’s milieu.

For small business, Peachtree Manufacturing is a nice package, for example. It is accounting manufacturing software that runs small business like a big one in functionality. Bottom line?  Know your business; one size does not fit all, or even most.
