An ERP (enterprise resource planning) system can be defined as software that integrates every operational business function into one primary database; implements department specific tools, such as finance, accounting, sales, manufacturing, etc to improve efficiency; keeps better records and tracking of all company processes; greatly improves decision making due to information flow and the visibility of the corporate sectors; and speeds up ability to manage various operations and departments. ERP systems endeavor to create an integrated product that manages the majority of operations in a company.  They are designed to integrate across functions in order to craft one unified system from a grouping of separate, insular applications. To further distinguish ERP systems from general applications framework and other standard software, accounting functionality is required.

In a world of fast and ever-changing technology, the one mandatory piece of software that all businesses need to compete at the top levels of their market area is an ERP software system. ERP systems are powerful tools. Studies show that, on average, the systems improve business efficiency by close to thirty percent in just three months time.

So, with so much riding on this software, why wouldn’t every business buy ERP? First of all, ERP Systems are expensive. Secondly, it is crucial to keep in mind that ERP systems represent a revolution that will involve every internal process. Before investing money and labor, a company must be sure it is purchasing the ERP system that is right for it.

The best way for a company to ensure it is buying and implementing the best ERP system is to first compare ERP Systems. This comparison must be preceded by a tough scrutiny of every department –how it functions and how those functions contribute to the whole enterprise- what is working and what is not; what is needed to help each department become more effective.

There are a few steps that will help a company Compare ERP Systems successfully. First, a business should identify a project manager who is familiar with the business’ needs and future goals. Draw up a list of must-haves from this information. Next, settle on a budget limit for the ERP system, as well as a timeline for implementation. Narrow the available ERP software packages to three or four models that can satisfy all the above requirements. After that, it is time to contact the vendors of the ERP systems that fit the established criteria in order to ask for a demo. Gather all key players to attend the demonstration. This should have narrowed choices down to two.  And, then it is time to research the vendors.  Which is financially secure and able to support the product far into the future?
