MRP Software for Small Businesses

The initials MRP stand for two closely related terms: Material Requirements Planning, a software-based manufacturing, inventory control, production planning system; and Manufacturing Resource Planning II, a software-based planning method that incorporates all of the manufacturer's resources.

MRP Software for Small Businesses is used by smaller manufacturing businesses to determine the materials required and the time frame within which they might be needed. MRP software creates a central data file that traces all records and reports.  It provides information on which parts from the inventory make-up each product being manufactured, and when inventory is running low so that more resources can be ordered. Good MRP software is also able to incorporate vendor management, capacity planning, billing, and follow production cycle times through the path of work orders.

MRP Software for Small Businesses must fulfill three purposes since manufacturers’ goals are to get their products made well from the best possible material, in the fastest amount of time possible, and to the customer who placed an order as quickly as possible. The top three uses of the MRP resources for small manufacturers then are: to control and plan the types and amounts of materials produced; to ensure that all products meet the customers' demands for the product, the customers' expressed deadlines, and at the least amount of cost without sacrificing quality; and, to plan an expedient and growth-driven accounting process.

MRP Software is restricted to the functionalities of manufacturing units, and that is often considered a shortcoming by businesses which need more. This shortcoming only becomes more obvious when taking into account the fact that in today’s market, the actual procurement cost of an MRP system can range from fifty thousand to several million dollars, and this does not include the annual software maintenance fees. As a result, many small businesses consider an MRP software system to be income-draining. What they want is reasonably priced MRP software systems in a practical application that have been designed to be used by smaller sized businesses.

Yes, the development of ERP followed as a logical step to MRP, but ERP is not the solution for small businesses. ERP is really umbrella-like software where all the core business functions are processed under a single, integrated system. It is usually understood to mean a more complicated system that connects data from all departments and organizes it into information that will prove useful to a large enterprise.
