ERP Software for Manufacturing

The transformation of raw materials into finished goods or product by using machinery is seen as a process called manufacturing. To help manage and control all the aspects of manufacturing (purchasing, materials, shipment, orders, etc) software called Manufacturing Requirements Planning, or MRP and later MRPII, was developed. A direct outcome of this software was the development of more comprehensive software that could organize and control even more facets and operational procedures that are necessarily part of a company.  This new software was called Enterprise Resource Planning, or ERP.

Originally, all ERP software was intentionally designed for use in the manufacturing industry. Today, those ERP systems are called ERP Software for Manufacturing to differentiate them from more recently developed ERP software systems that can be implemented in other types of businesses, in other types of industries. It should also be noted that the original erp software solutions were meant to be implemented in large enterprises. Only a business with deep pockets was able to afford the enormous expense of those first systems. Nowadays, this is no longer true.  ERP software is available for companies of all sizes, too. And, there are vendors that specialize in ERP software –whether for manufacturing businesses or not- for medium to small sized companies.

ERP Software for Manufacturing systems bring together all resources, information, and activities needed to carry out operational business processes and measure performance. More than that, real-time enterprise software presents businesses with a structure to help formulate strategy,  establish operational guidelines that shorten cycle times throughout the supply chain, improve customer relations, and promote the most efficient and effective decision-making possible. ERP Manufacturing software shortens lead times associated with warehouse transfers, supplier orders, and order shipments to customers. The ultimate goal of ERP Software for Manufacturing then can be summed up as: to cut costs and produce profit.

With more and more vendors designing product, ERP Software systems have gotten quite sophisticated. Just in the area of ERP Software for Manufacturing, there exist software solutions that can join together disparate systems previously being used by a company, in order to then effortlessly create custom solutions that operate collaboratively. Additionally, some of these newer, more sophisticated ERP software systems are capable of making predictions!  These systems include functions that can make accurate forecasts through the use of an array of highly developed algorithms. Some software can even determine the best algorithm for each item based on previous usage.
